Setting the Benchmark in Green Hydrogen Production
French pioneer Lhyfe has become Europe’s largest RFNBO-certified (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) green hydrogen producer, based on installed electrolyzer capacity and the number of certified production sites. Four sites in France and Germany have been awarded the EU’s most stringent green hydrogen certification, ensuring full compliance with the EU’s renewable sustainability framework.
Certified Sites and Production Capacity
The four certified sites include:
- Bouin (1 MW) in France’s Pays de la Loire — the world’s first hydrogen production site directly connected to a wind farm.
- Buléon (5 MW) in Brittany, France.
- Bessières (5 MW) in Occitanie, France.
- Schwäbisch Gmünd (10 MW) in Baden-Württemberg, Germany — Lhyfe’s largest site and Germany’s second-largest RFNBO hydrogen facility.
Combined, these sites offer 21 MW of capacity and can produce up to 8.3 tonnes of green hydrogen per day. Certification took effect in May 2025, with the German site officially inaugurating in October 2025.
Importance of RFNBO Certification
RFNBO certification, established under the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), guarantees that hydrogen is produced via water electrolysis powered entirely by renewable energy, with full lifecycle emissions tracking and traceability. Lhyfe is currently the only RFNBO-certified supplier in France, enabling customers to access European and national subsidies supporting sustainable hydrogen production and use.
Strategic Regional Hydrogen Distribution
Lhyfe operates one of Europe’s largest and most advanced fleets of hydrogen transport trailers — nearly 70 units — enabling continent-wide bulk delivery. This extensive regional reach supports green hydrogen supply across diverse industrial and mobility applications, advancing decarbonization. Produced hydrogen is also used in testing scenarios such as combustion trials, salt cavern storage, mixed-fuel boilers, and construction machinery operations.
Future Outlook and Industry Impact
Lhyfe’s leadership in RFNBO-certified green hydrogen positions the company as a central driver of Europe’s energy transition. With projects across 12 countries and an electrolyzer pipeline approaching 10 GW, Lhyfe is rapidly expanding. Its replicable, flexible site design and renewable-powered electrolysis strengthen the feasibility of green hydrogen as an alternative for industrial and mobility sectors.
This milestone highlights the rising importance of certified green hydrogen in meeting strict sustainability goals and advancing a circular, low-carbon European economy.
