Europe's First: Austrian Chip Factory Fully Transitions to Green Hydrogen, Phasing Out Gray Hydrogen

歐洲首創:奧地利晶片廠全面轉用綠氫,告別灰氫

Green Hydrogen System Overview

Infineon Technologies has fully transitioned its semiconductor manufacturing facility in Villach, Austria, to green hydrogen produced on-site through electrolysis, replacing the gray hydrogen previously derived from natural gas and trucked in from Germany. This shift was made possible by the installation of a 2 MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer on-site, capable of producing approximately 290 metric tons of high-purity green hydrogen per year—fully meeting the Villach facility's hydrogen requirements.

Why This Matters

This initiative not only significantly reduces supply chain emissions but also strengthens supply security and supports Infineon's corporate carbon neutrality goals. It also eliminates exposure to natural gas market volatility and long-distance logistics. Officially launched on August 20, 2025, the project makes Villach Europe's first semiconductor factory to be entirely supplied by on-site green hydrogen. All hydrogen used at the facility is generated using hydropower and wind energy, achieving 100% renewable energy supply.
